UPC Take IT (kabel) + FBF 7170

Beitragvon PDM » Di 06 Apr, 2010 11:57

Initially, let me apologise for posting in English (my written German is terrible).

I received my Thomson WLAN Cable Modem last Friday and realised within a few minutes that :
LAN <---> LAN : ok
WLAN <---> WLAN : ok
LAN <---> WLAN : did not function (as previously reported within this, and other, forums).

So, I decided to utilise my FBF 7170 v1 + OS 58.04.78. I configured the FBF 7170 and connected it to my Thomson cable modem and now I can utilise the WLAN FBF ---> LAN FBF/Thomson (as well as internet).

The next step I would like to achieve is to switch my analogue telephone from Thomson (LINE 1) to FBF 7170.
It does not seem that I can simply connect Thomson LINE 1 ----> FBF 7170 Fon50 and FBF 7170 Fon 1,2,3 ----> telephone.

How can I utilise the telephone from FBF7170 via UPCs Thomson cable modem?

(German responses are also welcome).

why do you post some cable specific questions (the "kabel" term you used in the subject) in the subforum for dsl-products?
and if your german isn't good - google translation does a good job:

http://tinyurl.com/yez3uot hat geschrieben:Forum Rules

if you don't prefer google: bing, and babelfish brought the same translation.

the right place brings you to the right answer.

Do you have a written manual or pdf-manual for your FRITZ!Box(F!B)? You can download a pdf-manual from the AVM-FTP-Server.

@penguinforce : apologies for posting in the wrong forum (ADSL/xDSL is ADSL/xDSL regardless of English/German) I shouldn't have been trying to multi-multi-task whilst submitting my query.
I should have posted it within "KABEL & GLAS, SAT & STROM" forum where all the other UPC kabelmodem related issues are posted.

@jutta : I would appreciate it if you could move the thread to the above mentioned sub-forum.

@preiti : Yeap, I do have the manual and have read through it. However, I have not been able make any progress hence my post here. Hoping someone else had a similar setup.

I think there is a chapter in which you can read how to configure the F!B without using the integrated ADSL-modem.
I remember that some members of the forum configured LAN1 as gateway instead of ADSL/TEL. They wrote that this change can be made via the webinterface in the firmware. If you can´t find such an option make a firmware-update to the latest version. Please take care before downloading the firmware because there are different versions for Germany and Austria!

I do already have the Fritz!Box 7170 working via LAN1 to the Thomson TWG850-4U cable modem (see attachment) i.e. WLAN, LAN (FBF & Thompson) and internet connectivity.

However, I'd rather have my telephone connected to the Fritz!Box instead of the Thomson cable modem.
Currently, the telephone is connected to TEL1 on Thomson cable modem.
However, IF I connect a RJ11 cable from TEL1 on Thomson cable modem to the FBF 7170's DSL/TEL (as FON So is for ISDN) and then FBF LINE1,2,3 via RJ11 to the telephone I hear no dial tone... this is the area which is grey to me...

I did see that someone had connected their FBF7050 to a UPC cable modem and had the telephone functioning via FBF here :

This connection should be the right one, but pin-assignment is crucial.
The FBF DSL/TEL plug has nonstandard pinout,
you cannot connect with a straight (1:1 connected) RJ11 cable.
What kind of cables/adapters do you have?

no, it's a FBF 7140.
Difference could be important, as pinout of FBF DSL/TEL plug varies between different models.
I recently owned a FBF 7050, and pin-assignment is definitely different to that in this post.
I am currently buying a FBF 7170 on ebay, so I can tell you the right pin-assignment soon.

Furthermore, perhaps you have to configure your FBF.
On my FBF 7050, I got a dialtone even without PSTN connected.
Consult the manual on how to enable PSTN and configure telephony devices.

I have several RJ11 <> RJ11 cables I can re-pin. Last night I tried :
Code: Alles auswählen
Cable Modem                FBF DSL/TEL
RJ11                             RJ11
====                             ====
PIN 1            -------------  PIN 1
                 Â¦
PIN 2 -----------               PIN 2

PIN 3 -----------               PIN 3
                 Â¦
PIN 4            -------------  PIN 4

which did not appear to work.

What pin assign, ent do you have with your FBF 7050?
As, I was going to next try :
Code: Alles auswählen
Cable Modem                FBF DSL/TEL
RJ11                             RJ11
====                             ====
PIN 1------------------------   PIN 1
                 Â¦
PIN 2 -----------               PIN 2

PIN 3 -----------               PIN 3
                 Â¦
PIN 4 ------------------------  PIN 4

The "Fixed Line" number is configured and assigned to Fon 1 (for all in/outgoing calls); still no dialtone though. Perhaps, this could also be a difference between the models?

I have several RJ11 <> RJ11 cables I can re-pin.

excellent, you are better equipped than me, I will have to warm up the soldering iron. :D

I have got my FBF 7170 now.
First notice: it seems, that there are different versions of FBF 7170,
as the connectors on my box do not match the manual, that I downloaded from AVM. :x
So we should be careful, because we could have different versions as well.

I have started with the connection between the FBF and the telephone device:

My FBF has all 3 outlets for analog phones combined into 1 single connector.
It's called FON 1-3 and is a 6 pin RJ11 connector.
I connected this to my Phone with an ordinary RJ11 cable (2 center pins connected straight)
and get some kind of dialtone!
Dialtone is: 3 short beeps, pause, and so on.
FBF is just factory-resetted, nothing else connected yet besides LAN cable, no VOIP accounts configured yet.
Tested with 2 different phones.
Sometimes I have to wait for the dialtone for up to 15 sec., but it always appears.

Then I configured "Phone 1 (analog)" for a normal telephone device,
and when the wizard asked, if i could hear the phone ring, it was actually ringing.

That is my status for the moment, see if you can reproduce that.

I'm quite sure that the 1st schematic I posted is correct; as stated here :
http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/showthread.php?t=148561

I found that whilst I have no dialtone (after 30 secs - at which point I hang up) IF I ring my number from my mobile the call does route its way through to the telephone connected to the FON1,2,3 socket i.e. it rings. However, upon answering it immediately disconnects. I am unable to ring out.

I am going to try another OS later on tonight when I get sometime. My FBF7170 also does not look like the pictures depicted within the manual. I've had it for approx 3 years and believe it is a v1 box (originally Annex B which I converted to Annex A - I will be reverting to Annex B to re-try later on).

Good luck with your soldering...

strange symptoms.
How is the phone connected to the FBF?

I agree.
What i can say definitely at this point, is that the cable i made for the FBF 7050, does not work for my FBF 7170.
I will solder this one:

Sorry for the delay,
here are the test results with the above mentioned cable:

Connected to PSTN (with TAE-RJ11 adapter to the phone wall outlet):
everything OK.

Connected to a Sipura 2000 VOIP ATA (instead of Thomson cable modem, which i don't have):
incoming calls no problem.
outgoing calls work, if I get the correct dialtone when lifting the receiver.
In about 3 of 10 cases I do not get the correct dialtone (continuous tone),
but a beep-beep-beep-pause-etc tone, and then a busy tone, when I try to dial out.
In this cases the phone-LED on the FBF stays off, also the off-hook-LED of the Sipura.

Seems that FBF and Sipura 2000 are not completely compatible,
this could also be the case with the Thomson cable modem.

Could not determine the cause of the incompatibiliy, the output voltage on the phone output of the Sipura
is the same as on the PSTN line, no other idea. I'm sure, that the cable is correct.

Any progress in your experiments ?
